Happy anniversary Sonic! Celebrating 25 years of our favourite hedgehog
Whether you've been gaming long enough to remember blowing on an N64 cartridge or whether you've only recently picked up a Nintendo 3DS or Wii, you'll instantly recognise the fuzzy blue blur that is Sonic the Hedgehog. From PlayStation to PC, television show to arcade game, Sonic is a beloved character that has a home in the hearts of gamers all over the world.
This year, June 23 will mark the 25th birthday of everyone's favourite spiky mammal. That's a quarter of a century we've spent helping Sonic, Amy, Tails, Knuckles and the rest of the gang collect gold rings and speed their way across our screens. With several rumours flitting about here and there, it's looking as though this year's celebrations will be big.
A possible new game?
There's the usual ummm'ing and aaah'ing, but for the most part, Sega has been very tight-lipped about what we can expect from 2016's Sonicaversary. That said, a gamer can speculate!
Earlier this month, Sega released a flashy new logo for the anniversary, signalling something exciting on the horizon. Rumours of a remake have been circulating the web, especially since a picture posted on Twitter shows the new logo's background as the first ever level from the original games.
The most convincing evidence of a new game, however, comes from Johnny Gioeli, lead singer of the band Crush 40. The musician posted that they may be planning a few performances for the anniversary and that there was a chance the band might be writing songs for the new game. However, the post was immediately taken down.
Crash 40 has previously recorded music for Sonic games before, so while there's no official word from Sega, we can't help but get excited. In the meantime, sprint down to your nearest Playtime Entertainment and whet your appetite with a few speedy rounds of a Sonic game!
